Meadow, Wildlife & Woodland Tour

Chapter tour, free & open to the public. 

Take Hwy 61 towards Two Harbors. Take left (North) on Homestead Road. Go 1 mile to Wildwood Road and take a left (West). Go all the way to the end. There is a bus turn around. Go past the bus turn around and keep to the right.  for fire sign 1799. Can pull up to our house and if the lot is full, park along the driveway. Can park in the bus turn around.

"We have 40 acres which we purchased in 1997 and built in 2000. It was an old homestead / farm. The previous owner abandoned the home but mowed the property for hay, except for the last 7 or so years he owned it. When I bought it, what now is the meadow / pond area was an overgrown field with Timothy Grass, Birdsfoot Trefoil, Tansy and some native plants. There was also a lot of Alder and Willow which I cleared to re-create the meadow and then built the 6 wildlife ponds over the years and planting native plants throughout the meadow and in the ponds.  I am still fighting invasives but gaining ground. The area around the house is planted with apple and pear trees, along with berry producing shrubs. In the forested area, it was dominated by Balsam Fir. I had been thinning them out to encourage other tree and shrub species to grow (both naturally and stuff I planted). When the Spruce Budworm came through and killed approximately 80% of the Balsam Fir, I received a grant from the NRCS to cut down the dead Balsam Fir, which has opened the canopy and allowed Birch, Bur Oak, Elm, Aspen, Maple and other trees to flourish. I am still in the process of completing this project. I have put out many bird nesting structures  and I can explain what uses them and the successes and failures I have experienced. "
