6:30 am - 8:30 am
Hartley Nature Center
Join us on Wednesday Sept. 25 as we kick off the 2013-2014 season of Wild Ones adult-ed programs at Hartley Nature Center. Whether you were a founding member of our Wild Ones Arrowhead Chapter way back in 2000 or recently signed up at the Harvest Fest on our interested persons list we hope to see you there!
WHAT: Seed collecting, sharing and seed starting “how to”
We plan to start with a short tour of the butterfly garden in front of Hartley during which we may also collect some seed. We will then go inside and discuss steps for starting native wildflowers from seed, including how to help a seed break dormancy, followed by a seed exchange.
WHEN: Refreshments and socializing starts inside at 6:30 PM. We will start touring the garden just in front of the building at 6:45 PM. (Note that our programs typically start at 7:00 but with sunset at 7:02 that evening it seems prudent to start a bit earlier). If you can’t make it that early no worries – we are casual so come when you can. We usually are done and locking up around 8:30 PM.
WHO: This program, organized by Wild Ones: Native Plants, Natural Landscapes, is open to the public and free to Hartley members. A $4 goodwill donation is requested from non-members.
HOW: If you have seed from local native plants that you are willing to share please bring it to the meeting, either pre-split into small, labeled containers (old pill containers work well or small zip-lock bags) OR in one large container. We will have small containers available at the meeting along with additional blank labels. Either way just be sure to have at least one label/sign that clearly indicates:
- the plant’s common name and latin name if you know it,
- preferred growing conditions (wet/dry, sun/shade),
- bloom color and time,
- height and
- propensity to spread.
