Ancient Rocks of Minnesota’s Arrowhead, and the Plants that Love Them

John Green will review the dramatic geological history of the Arrowhead area, with maps and outcrop photos, and then feature some of the interesting common and more unusual plants in the area, especially those that like to grow on the rocks.

John Green is a retired Professor of Geology at UMD, having taught many courses especially Volcanology, Mineralogy, and Environmental geology.  His main area of research has been the bedrock geology of the North Shore area and the Ely area, where he has done extensive geological mapping, trying to uncover clues to this geological history.  Having been a general naturalist all his life, John is always looking at the plants and listening to the birds as he crashes through the woods or examines the lakeshore ledges.
Location: Hartley Nature Center
Time: Tuesday, May 2 –  6:30 pm refreshments & socialize, 7:00 pm program
